Lesson 3: Bucket Drumming
Concepts: Learn how to play basic rhythms on drums
Content:
The children will apply rhythms by performing them on large, empty drums or buckets.
Preparation:
You will need large empty drums or buckets.
You will need sticks to strike with.
If you don't have buckets available, use a table or body percussion.
Exercise 1:
Today, we will play in 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 time on the drums. Last week, we clapped Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star, and this time we will play it on the drums. While playing, we will count in 2/4 time. One beat is equivalent to one count.
Exercise 2:
The waltz we listened to last week is written in 3/4 time. Let's now try to play drums and count along with the song. If you'd like, you can have the children clap the rhythm first before playing it on the drums.
Exercise 3:
We will play "Frère Jacques" (Vader Jakob) on the drums again, but this time we will strike in different places on the drum. You will strike on the top of the drum twice and then once on each side of the drum, following the rhythm of the song. (Refer to our video for assistance and find our recording of Frère Jacques on our website.)
