When did we compete?
We were privileged enough to have participated in the international competition from 17-20 April 2024 in Houston, Texas!
Core Values
Core values are one of the most important aspects of the FLL and show how your team communicate within the team, as well as with other teams! This year they also brought in an award for Gracious Professionalism®. FIRST defines Gracious Professionalism as a way of doing things that encourages high quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.
Innovation Project
Each season you have to identify a problem in modern society based on the topic given and come up with a solution to that particular problem. In 2022, we designed a robot that can go through orchards and pick fruit. This season we had a better idea! Using technology such as Virtual Reality and the Internet, we helped less privileged learners to engage in art and creative thinking, specifically music!
Robot Games
A big part of the competition is the robot games. This is also the part that requires the most preparation and time. You are required to complete a series of challenges on a game board without exceeding the time limit of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This season we competed with a Spike Prime based robot rather than our original EV3 model.
ROBOT-DESIGN
The team has to:
Identify a mission strategy
Program and design a robot
Create effective coding and robots
Iterate and improve the robot and coding
Document the design process and everyone's contributions
We participated at nationals in Johannesburg, December 2023. The competition lasted 2 days, our first run and presentation being on the first day with our other 2 runs and judging call backs on the second day. At first our runs did not look good but on our last run we scored 370 points, which bumped us up to third on the robot game rankings. There were 5 teams in the call back session, us being one of them. After a long debate, the judges gave the end results and we came first in South Africa! Since we came first we qualified for the Worlds competition in Houston, Texas.

We got our mind on the FLL
We’re doing our favorite runs
We only have one thing on our minds
You got us stuck on the FLL
The programming is brand new
Ideas are sparkling in our eyes
You got those core values and research, you know it
You got us dancing on the floor so let us show it
Robot games are what we want, so much fun, so why not?
Design is just what we do
Yeah, we’re programming the robot at night
We only got one thing at the back of our minds
I’m feeling like this might be our time to shine, with you,

After many months of hard work, we flew to Houston, Texas in April 2024. The competition lasted a total of 3 days, with events each day after the competition. We went to the karaoke with a German team that we met and the next night to a restaurant with them. We also made friends with a team from Nebraska. Our robot games went okay but our innovation project presentation was awesome! We made some of the judges cry with our heart warming story of creating music lessons for rural schools, that don't have the resources to give class. At the reward ceremony, there were some spectacular performances of bands and dancers. We came first (in the world) with our innovation project and came first in tie with 2 other teams for the Gracious Professionalism® award.
