When will we compete?
We will be participating at our international competitions on the 7th to 9th May 2025 in South Africa and 5th to 7th July in Australia!
Core Values
Core values are one of the most important aspects of the FLL and show how your team communicate within the team, as well as with other teams! This year they also brought in an award for Gracious Professionalism®. FIRST defines Gracious Professionalism as a way of doing things that encourages high quality work, emphasizes the value of others, and respects individuals and the community.
Innovation Project
Each season you have to identify a problem in modern society based on the topic given and come up with a solution to that particular problem. In 2023, we used technology such as Virtual Reality and the Internet. We helped less privileged learners to engage in art and creative thinking, specifically music! This season we decided to create an app that allows beachgoers to take photo's of the ocean. The app will then tell the users whether or not there is a rip current and also gives information about what they should do if they get caught in one.
Robot Games
A big part of the competition is the robot games. This is also the part that requires the most preparation and time. You are required to complete a series of challenges on a game board without exceeding the time limit of 2 minutes and 30 seconds. This season we will competing with our previous season's Spike Prime model, with a few new attachments.
ROBOT-DESIGN
The team has to:
Identify a mission strategy
Program and design a robot
Create effective coding and robots
Iterate and improve the robot and coding
Document the design process and everyone's contributions
TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK
CHORUS
On the 12th October 2024 we participated at Protea Heights in Cape Town. Our team captain, Lara, could sadly not join us due to injuries. We started early in the morning and did our practice run and 1st run of the day. The 1st run didn't go exactly as planned, but we didn't let that faze us. We then had our robot and innovation presentations. The judges were really impressed with our semi functional version of the app that we are planning to create. After lunch break we finished our last 2 runs, which went better than expected. At the prize giving ceremony we received a 1st place in the Robot Games and got the Champions Award. We qualified for nationals and will be participating in Johannesburg on the 6th and 7th December 2024.
On the 6th and 7th December 2024 we participated at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg. We started early in the morning and set up our stall. On our first day we had 3 practice runs with one scoring run. Our first scoring run wasn't as well coordinated as we hoped, but we didn't give up hope. The second day kicked of with our second scoring run following with presentations. The judges were not as impressed with our semi functional version of the app as they were on regionals, but overall, we still scored well in our presentations. After lunch break we finished our last run, which went better than our previous runs. We sadly did not achieve our max score of 520 at nationals, but still got invitations to 2 international competitions. At the prize giving ceremony we received a 1st place for the Robot Design and got the Peer Nomination Award as well. We qualified for OAC (Open African Championship) which will be held in Cape Town from 7 to 9 May 2025 and we also qualified for the Asia Pacific Open in Australia from 5 to 7 July.
We competed from 7 to 9 May at the Open African Championship in Cape Town, South Africa. The competition took place at the CTICC over a span of 3 days. The first day we set up stalls and got to meet many amazing teams from all around the world. At the opening ceremony, we threw balls of yarn to symbolise the connections that all the teams will form in the coming days. We then sent all the strings to the front to spread the connections and to show how if we all work together, we can do anything! The South African teams also had the privilege to sing our national anthem on stage. At the end of the first day, we had the cultural evening where we learned more about different cultures from all around the world. All the teams learned the "Waka Waka" dance which was danced right through out the competition. On the second day we had our practice runs, 2 official runs and presentations. Our first runs did not go entirely as planned, but on our second official run we scored 425 points. Our presentations also went great and we walked out of the presentation room with big smiles on our faces. We met team FFLisch (Germany), Scrat (Czechia) and Crash Rovers (South Africa) and spent a lot of time with them on the first as well as second day. On the second evening we went to the aquarium with the teams and got to know each other. On the final day we had our last scoring run and alliance runs. We worked with team Smooth Sailors in an alliance and did really well. We then packed away our stalls and got ready for the award ceremony. We won a 4th place in the Core Values category and placed 19th overall. The "Waka Waka" dance as well as the "Jerusalema" dance was done after the award ceremony and a nice group photo was taken afterwards with all the teams on it. We are so privileged that we got the oppertunity to compete here and made many lifelong friends that continue to support us.
